I want all of you to get further in the reading so I am going to make today's post shorter. I want you to pick one word or term that you have read so far that is unfamiliar to you. Then, write a short definition or explanation of what that word/thing is. It is similar to the assignment from last week. Try not to pick terms that others have picked, but I understand that that may happen. As long as there are no answers that are copied verbatim, that should be fine.
If you are familiar with everything in the book, then write a short paragraph about something you want to know more about from the book i.e petroleum engineering, Albert Einstein, baklavah, Bob Hope, Hare Krishnas, etc.
Shohar ammeh is a word I didn't recognize because it is Iranian. It means uncle in English. In Iranian they have many different words for uncle depending on your specific relationship to them.
ReplyDeleteKvetching: A person who complains a great deal or a complaint. Firoozah's uses this when she says; "Although i enjoyed kvetching with my Jewish friends.... it made me at first think that it was some kind of activity but when i looked into it, it also makes sense that it is complaining because it kinda sounds like venting except it as "ch" in the word.

ReplyDeleteI think it means that all the flowers in her aunt's garden reminds her about the smell of Disneyland.
a word that i came upon which i didn't know was Persillade. Persillade is a sauce mixture. in the sauce it has parsley chopped together with seasonings including garlic, herbs, oil, and vinegar. in the story it said she stepped on it which it is used to eat with asparagus.
ReplyDelete"villa" - It is a word that is used to describe a country house, usually consisting of farm buildings and residential quarters around a courtyard. In the book it was where were located for the vacation.
ReplyDeleteBali is an island in Indonesia that is a popular tourist destination. It is also home to a large Hindu population. It is very tropical and full of old ruins. I want to go there.
ReplyDeleteberibboned means to be decorated with ribbons. the story talks about how they went on a decorative boat. i wish i got to ride on one of those.
